Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced today that the Legacy Way tunnel will open to traffic from 9:00pm tonight.
Construction on the 4.6km Legacy Way tunnel commenced in 2011, and provides an alternative route for traffic travelling between the Western Freeway and the ICB.
Legacy way is part of the Councils significant commitment to tackling traffic congestion. It will allow Western suburb motorists to avoid seven sets of traffic lights, providing a critical link between the western suburbs and the airport and TradeCoast areas.
The Legacy Way Tunnel will contribute to reducing traffic bottlenecks on alternative routes such as Milton Road, Coronation Drive and on our local streets.
Legacy Way was named by Council in honour of the not-for-profit entity, Legacy, that has been providing services and caring for veterans’ families since 1923. One cent from every toll collected will be donated to Legacy. This figure will be indexed to inflation yearly and is expected to raise more than $600,000.
The construction of Legacy Way also included the dedication to Council of a new, four-hectare expansion of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha which is now open. The expansion increases the Gardens' social amenity, connectivity and open space and has been built on the area previously occupied by Legacy Way's western worksite, on the corner of Mt Coot-tha Road.
Thank you to all local residents for the patience demonstrated throughout the construction of this significant infrastructure project and I encourage you to be among the first to use the Legacy Way Tunnel.
