Storm ravaged suburbs lead charge for warning service
Tuesday, 29 October 2013
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is encouraging people to sign up to Council’s Early Warning Alert service with residents from The Gap and Forest Lake leading the charge in registrations.
Cr Quirk said the take-up rate among these suburbs wasn’t surprising given past experiences with severe weather events.
“Residents of The Gap don’t need much reminder of the ferocious storm that ripped through the suburb in 2008, so it’s good to see almost one in five people (18%) who live there have signed up to the service,” he said.
“It was all too familiar across the suburbs in January this year when the Australia Day storm tore across the city, leaving widespread fallen trees and debris at suburbs like Bracken Ridge in the north and Forest Lake in the south-west and many suburbs in between.
The five suburbs with the highest take-up of the Early Warning Alert Service include The Gap (1770), Forest Lake (1630), Brisbane CBD (1501), Indooroopilly (1142) and Bracken Ridge (1138).
Cr Quirk said the alerts are sent to residents by SMS, email or recorded telephone message when a severe weather event is forecast, allowing for preparations to protect homes and assets.
“Signing up to the service is an ideal way for residents to both stay informed about fast-moving weather and be prepared when a storm can be predicted ahead of time,” Cr Quirk said.
“We also advise residents to prepare their properties and yards by securing loose items, removing overhanging branches and clearing gutters.”
Registration is restricted to one resident per household and is free to Brisbane residents. The service proved invaluable during the January 2011 floods and subscribers rose from around 10,000 during the floods to more than 80,000 today.
